13th ASOSAI General Assembly in Kuala Lumpur
ASOSAI, the Asian Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions, held its General Assembly in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from 9 to 13 February 2015. This General Assembly was attended by some 200 participants from almost all ASOSAI member SAIs and numerous observers, among them also the Secretary General of INTOSAI.
In the framework of this triennial ASOSAI conference, the 6th Symposium was held under the theme "Leveraging Technology to Enhance Audit Quality and Effectiveness". Further key topics of the General Assembly included the recent developments with regard to the UN Post-2015 Development Agenda, the themes of the forthcoming INCOSAI XXII in 2016 as well as capacity-building measures in the Asian region.
The INTOSAI Secretary General, Mr Josef Moser, outlined in particular the recent resolution of the UN General Assembly on strengthening SAIs and the importance of the future UN Sustainable Development Goals for the work of SAIs (RES A/69/228). He asked the attending representatives of the Asian SAIs to intensify their efforts regarding the independence of government auditing in their countries.
The Secretary General also accorded great significance to raising the awareness of national and international decision makers concerning INTOSAI's position on the UN Post-2015 Development Agenda, namely the inclusion of independence and capacity building and the improvement of public accounting systems, for creating transparency and accountability.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister of Malaysia referred expressly to the recent UN General Assembly resolution in this opening address. He thanked the INTOSAI General Secretariat for its efforts regarding the strengthening of transparency in global governance.
The 6th Symposium on IT matters in auditing was devoted to the effective use of technology in order to enhance audit quality and effectiveness.
In this regard, the INTOSAI Secretary General illustrated the importance of including national statistic systems, big data and data analysis as well as open data and information and communications technology as key elements of the future INTOSAI Strategic Plan for the period of 2017-2020.
