15th Congress of the Pacific Association of Supreme Audit Institutions focussing on capacity building

From 2 to 5 October 2012 the 15th Congress of the Pacific Association of Supreme Audit Institutions (PASAI) was held in Noumea, New Caledonia. On this occasion, the presidency of PASAI passed from the SAI of Tonga to the SAI of New Caledonia.

During the four-day Congress, in which about 20 Pacific Supreme Audit Institutions took part, the participants discussed current challenges in auditing, as well as on-going and planned programmes for capacity building. They debated cooperation audits, such as audits in the areas of "adaptation to climate change" and "access to safe drinking water" and adopted the business plan of PASAI for 2012/2013.

Mr. Josef Moser, INTOSAI Secretary General, Mr. Terence Nombembe, the current Chairman of the INTOSAI Governing Board, as well as Mr. Zhou Weipei, the representative of the National Audit Office of the People’s Republic of China as the First Vice-Chair of the INTOSAI Governing Board as well as the host of the upcoming XXI INCOSAI in 2013, participated as the representatives of INTOSAI.

In his speech Mr. Moser reported on current INTOSAI developments. The presentation covered therefore the progress made in the wake of the adoption of the UN General Assembly Resolution on strengthening the independence of Supreme Audit Institutions and the current activities in the framework of all four Strategic Goals of INTOSAI. Furthermore, he also informed about forthcoming activities such as the upcoming 63rd INTOSAI Governing Board Meeting in China in November as well as the 22nd VN/INTOSAI Symposium in Vienna in March 2013 on "Audit and Counselling by SAIs: Risks and Opportunities, as well as Possibilities for Engaging Citizens".

The next (16th) Congress of PASAI will be held in Guam in 2013.
