INTOSAI Secretary General at the ECOSOC High Level Political Forum in New York
In his statement at the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), INTOSAI Secretary General Josef Moser emphasized the important role of SAIs with regard to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the framework of the High Level Political Forum, which took place in New York from 3 to 11 July 2015, he highlighted the essential contribution of SAIs for ensuring transparency and accountability. He called upon the attendees to undertake everything possible to include the independence of SAIs, which is vital for their work, as well as the improvement of public accounting systems in the SDGs of the Post-2015 Agenda.
The Sustainable Development Goals, which are anchored in the Post-2015 Agenda, are the successor goals to the Millennium Development Goals and are to be adopted in autumn 2015. The Agenda comprises 17 goals and 169 targets, whereas goal 16 "[...] build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels" is of special importance for SAIs.
In New York, the INTOSAI Secretary General also met UN Under-Secretary-General Wu Hongbo and the new President of ECOSOC, H.E. Ambassador Oh Joon. The aim of the meeting with the newly elected President of ECOSOC was to ensure continuity of support by ECOSOC for the concerns of INTOSAI — in particular with regard to the Post-2015 Agenda. This support was pledged by H.E. Ambassador Oh Joon.
