United Nations expresses broad support for the strengthening of SAIs

INTOSAI is receiving full support by the United Nations for its endeavours to strengthen Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in the framework of the UN Post-2015 Development Agenda. This was clearly demonstrated during a working visit by the Secretary General of INTOSAI, Mr Josef Moser, at the United Nations from 19 to 23 January 2015.

The United Nations Secretary-General, Mr Ban Ki-moon, thus underlined the importance of the work of INTOSAI and the national SAIs to create transparency and accountability and thanked the INTOSAI Secretary General for the commitment of the organisation. He also announced full support for the strengthening of SAIs via the Post-2015 Development Agenda. "You can count on us", assured the United Nations Secretary-General.

The Secretary General of INTOSAI received equal endorsement at the interactive panel discussion "Independent Oversight Role of Supreme Audit Institutions (SAIs) in the Post-2015 Development Agenda", which was jointly organised by the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations and UN DESA on 21 January 2015. On this occasion, Mr Moser highlighted the readiness of INTOSAI and its member SAIs to contribute to the implementation of the Post-2015 Development Agenda. However, certain preconditions would need to be in place: SAI independence, capacity building for SAIs and improved public accounting systems in order to enable a true and fair view of public finances.

At this panel discussion, which was led by the Austrian ECOSOC President and Permanent Representative of Austria to the United Nations in New York, Mr Martin Sajdik, and the Under-Secretary-General for Economic and Social Affairs, Mr Wu Hongbo, both underscored the importance of INTOSAI and SAIs and affirmed their full support for the strengthening of SAIs in the framework of the Post-2015 Development Agenda, since, as stated by Under-Secretary-General Wu Hongbo, SAIs are of great significance for monitoring the national implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals.
