The visit of INTOSAI Secretary General Josef Moser at the United Nations (UN) in New York from 18 to 21 April 2016 was fully devoted to the activities of INTOSAI in the framework of the 2030 Agenda on sustainable development. On the occasion of his participation at the 15th Session of the UN Committee of Experts on Public Administration (CEPA), the Secretary General of INTOSAI met, among others, UN Under-Secretary-General Wu Hongbo, ECOSOC President Oh Joon and Chef de Cabinet of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, Edmond Mulet.
The main objective was to specify more details with regard to a planned INTOSAI side event, which is to be held in the framework of a ministerial segment of this year’s ECOSOC High Level Political Forum (18-20 July 2016) on the significant role of SAIs in implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and to obtain the support of the United Nations in this regard.
As the outcome of the meeting, UN Under-Secretary-General Wu Hongbo pledged that the Unit-ed Nations would support INTOSAI as co-organiser and that he would actively participate as a presenter at the side event. He also announced his plans to participate at INCOSAI XXII in December 2016.
Furthermore, Mr Moser also participated at the 15th CEPA Session, which revolved around the effective implementation of the SDGs. On this occasion, he informed the CEPA members on the important contribution that SAIs can make to the effective monitoring of the implementation of the SDGs and called upon the members to support the safeguarding of the necessary prerequisites (independence, improved accounting systems and outcome-oriented budgeting).
