INTOSAI Side Event at the UN HLPF in New York

"Accelerating implementation of the 2030 Agenda – the contribution of Supreme Audit Institutions." This topic was at the core of the INTOSAI Side Event held jointly by the INTOSAI General Secretariat, the INTOSAI Development Initiative and the INTOSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing at the UN High Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in New York on 15 July 2022. The Side Event, which was staged in a hybrid form, was hosted by the Permanent Mission of Austria to the United Nations in New York and co-sponsored by the Permanent Mission of Indonesia.

Six and a half years after the 2030 Agenda and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) had entered into force, the Side Event focused on the results and the impact of SDG-related audits by SAIs. In this context, those environment-related SDGs that took centre stage at this year’s HLPF (SDGs 14 – Life Below Water – and 15 – Life On Land) as well as SDG 16, which is particularly important for SAIs as institutions that contribute to safeguarding transparency, accountability and effectiveness, were at the heart of the event.

Representatives of the INTOSAI General Secretariat, IDI, the INTOSAI Working Group on Environmental Auditing and the SAIs of Brazil, Indonesia and the United States of America presented, based on practical examples, the important contribution that SAIs can make to a successful implementation of the SDGs.

Representatives of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and the United Nations as external partners of INTOSAI confirmed that SAIs, through their audits, play an essential role with regard to the review of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
